Yap Kai & Yoke Leng are getting married
In the bustling corridors of Yishun Town Secondary School, where youthful dreams and ambitions intertwined, Yap Kai first noticed Yoke Leng. Yap Kai was two years her senior, a confident and driven leader of the National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC). Yoke Leng, a spirited junior in the same unit, caught his eye not just with her dedication during drills but with her creative spark.
Their first conversation began after Graduation. Back then, Yoke Leng was an intriguing mini-entrepreneur(wanna-bee) selling colorful rainbow loom bracelets. Yap Kai, intrigued by her resourcefulness, commented on Yoke Leng's Instagram Post, asking about her small business with genuine curiosity. Yoke Leng’s shyness and enthusiastic explanation about her craft left an impression on him, and soon, their chats became a regular part of their tertiary school days. However, life’s currents pulled them in different directions. Both found themselves entangled in separate relationship commitments, and their budding connection faded into fond memories as they focused on their own paths...
Years passed, and the world changed dramatically with the onset of COVID-19. Confined to their homes during the lockdown in Singapore, Yap Kai found himself scrolling through old contacts, a wave of nostalgia hitting him as he stumbled upon Yoke Leng’s name. On a whim, he sent her a message to catch up, not expecting much. To his surprise, she replied (though only one message a day); their conversation flowed as if no time had passed. They discovered that both had recently parted ways with their previous partners, leaving a quiet space in their lives that neither had anticipated filling up so soon.
Virtual chats became their lifeline during the pandemic. They reminisced about NPCC days, laughed over shared memories of strict instructors and grueling training, and opened up about their personal struggles. As restrictions eased slightly, they began meeting for runs in their neighborhood parks, their footsteps syncing as easily as their conversations. These moments, though simple, rekindled a warmth between them that neither could ignore.
Their first official date was at Miam Miam in Bugis (the place where all first dates are arranged at) Yoke Leng ordered the striking Squid Ink Pasta, while Yap Kai opted for the Crayfish Pasta, their choices reflecting their distinct yet complementary personalities. As they ate, Yap Kai couldn’t help but chuckle at the black ink staining Yoke Leng’s lips, finding her utterly adorable even in that messy moment.
Yet, their journey wasn’t without its complications. Yoke Leng, in her honesty, revealed she had been seeing another guy during the early months of their renewed connection. Yap Kai, though initially unsettled, respected her candor and gave her the space to figure out her feelings. For eight months, they navigated this uncertainty. It was till Yoke Leng's 21st Birthday then she FINALLY made her choice; her heart settling firmly with Yap Kai, a decision which she didn't know back then was the start of something beautiful. #YAPTHEWINNER
Their relationship blossomed from there, built on a foundation of shared history and the resilience they’d both developed over the years. From NPCC to pandemic runs, from rainbow looms to ink-stained smiles, Yap Kai and Yoke Leng wove a love story that proved timing, though sometimes delayed, can be perfectly right in the end. They learned that life’s detours only made their reunion sweeter, a testament to a bond that refused to be forgotten.
